Stitching Stories: Scrappy Textile Collage
with ALI FERGUSON of the purple thread shed!

A simply gorgeous day, piecing, patching and stitching a textile collage inspired by “Stories From The Sewing Box” or “Stories From The Scullery". Perfect for all lovers of “vintage”, for those with fond childhood memories of playing with mum’s button box or licking cake mixture out of the mixing bowl and the smell of home baking! It is a lovely day of nostalgia and “slow stitching”.

Ali will help you to create a paper and fabric “ground” using a piece of old woollen blanket as a base. With a bit of guidance you will piece together a “patchwork of loveliness” from old and used fabrics & papers. You can choose from a fabulous selection of vintage materials from Ali’s studio such as - old table linens, 1940’s floral fabrics, sewing & knitting patterns, vintage dish towels and fabrics printed with text from 1950s magazines.

You will then start to add more surface decoration using vintage haberdashery - tape measures, buttons, press studs and safety pins and then start the lovely process of slow hand-stitching. You may even wish to add some hand stitched text. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert - running stitch and cross stitch are all you need but if you do wish to be more adventurous Ali will show you other lovely hand stitches and she will bring along a collection of vintage embroidery books for inspiration.

You may not finish the stitching on the day but don’t worry you’ll be given all the guidance you need to finish it at home.

While all the materials are provided you may wish to bring along some of your own bits & pieces to make your sampler truly personal. Think about fragments of old lace or fabric scraps and haberdashery itemsbuttons and buttons on cards, hooks & eyes (they can look great if they are still on their vintage card), press studs, buckles, needle packets, tape measures, safety pins, small unfinished “projects” and any other old bits and pieces that come to hand. If you are inspired by the scullery, then think dish towels, handwritten recipes (if you don’t want to use the recipe itself you could photocopy them onto brown Kraft paper and bring along), pages from vintage cookery books, lace doillies and pieces of embroidered table linens. If in doubt – bring it along!

Do know though, that you can turn up completely empty handed and there will be a great selection of materials for you to use.

This workshop is a perfect if you are an experienced stitcher but also completely suitable for absolute beginners don’t worry you’ll be shown everything you need to know!
