Patchwood Samplers - Personal Collections with Ali Ferguson The Purple Thread Shed - Saturday 22nd September 2018
Saturday 22nd September 2018 10am - 4pm
A gorgeous day of hand stitching with a difference creating an "embroidered sampler" from ‘patches’ of repurposed wood.
You will create six individual patches embellished with your own small treasures all hand stitched into place. These will then be stitched together to create your unique wall piece. By the end of the day you will feel as at home using the drill as you do your needle and thread.
The wood for your patches will be provided and Ali will bring along a lovely selection of vintage haberdashery & sewing box treasures from her studio, The Purple Thread Shed. However to make your sampler really personal do bring along your own small treasures & collections.
You could make a sampler based on your favourite book or story with a collection of related bits & pieces, or a sampler based around your family or memories of childhood. You could bring along the contents of your granny's sewing box or small bits from granpa's tool shed. Bits and pieces that you have gathered from nature make a beautiful collection – think about including some text from a nature book or similar.
Or you could just use a collection of little unrelated bits & pieces that you have collected together because "one day you will do something with them".
Think about old books (if you can bear to cut them up) and other printed pages – old magazine advertisements, postcards, letters and maps. Precious documents can be copied if you don’t want to cut them up – try copying onto brown kraft paper! Any other kind of paper ephemera is great such as old playing cards, tickets etc. Photos could be incorporated too.
Have fun thinking and gathering – it’s a gorgeous opportunity to display some of these really meaningful objects that tend to lie unused at the bottom of drawers.
There are a few messy bits so please bring an apron or at the very least don’t wear your Sunday Best!
