Needle & Thread Workshops

Scrappy Story Collage with Ali Ferguson The Purple Thread Shed - Sunday 23rd September 2018

Regular price £75.00

Sunday 23rd September 2018 10-4pm

A lovely day creating a truly personal fabric collage inspired by a favourite piece of ‘handwriting’.

We will start the day by printing your chosen piece of writing onto fabric using an inkjet printer. We’ll use this printed fabric as a starting point to piece together a scrappy collage from old and used fabrics & papers onto a woolen blanket ground.

You’ll be working with a fabulous  selection of vintage and used materials from Ali’s studio such as - old table linens, 1940’s floral fabrics, tweeds & stripey shirts, old quilts & hexies as well as a great selection of vintage papers. By using old and used materials we are bringing their stories to the piece too!

Once you’ve created your ground you’ll start pulling it all together through the lovely process of slow hand-stitching. Ali will encourage you to let this become a relaxed and organic process and will show you how to highlight chosen words and phrases from your text.

Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced stitcher - running stitch and cross stitch are all you need but if you do wish to be more adventurous Ali will show you some of her favourite hand stitches and you can refer to her collection of vintage embroidery books for inspiration.

You probably won’t finish your collage during the workshop but you’ll be given all the guidance you need to finish it at home.

While a great selection of old & used materials will be provided you may wish to bring along some bits & pieces from your own stash. Think about fragments of lace, old fabric scraps and haberdashery items, unfinished “sewing projects” and any other old bits and pieces that come to hand and are meaningful to you.

You can also bring along some pieces of personal handwriting to copy onto fabric. This could be old letters or postcards, handwritten recipes, a birth certificate or other documents or even pages from a child’s school jotter. These won’t be harmed as we will simply be photocopying them. You will get the opportunity to print two A4 pieces of fabric so bear this in mind when choosing what to bring. We only have time to make copies so make sure things are the right size before you come.

Don’t worry if you don’t have time to look things out - Ali will also bring a great collection of old pieces of text for use.

This workshop is suitable for everyone from experienced stitchers to beginners – you’ll be shown everything you need to know!

Includes: materials, equipment, mid morning cake (of course) and a healthy lunch!
