Whether you are new to dressmaking and would like to learn how to follow a pattern, and practice and improve the techniques required to make your chosen garment - or an experienced sewer who would love the excuse to indulge in a day or two of focused stitching - or a free spirit wanting to go ‘off-piste’ and experiment with fabric combinations, texture, pattern, colour and decorative techniques - Melanie's dressmaking workshops will provide you with guidance and inspiration, and teach the skills you need.

Saturday 10th November 10am - 4pm

Make a dress and with Melanie's guidance use some special finishing touches to create something truly unique and give a beautiful finish.

Patterns that we suggest (but not limited to)  ‘The Dress Shirt’ by Merchant & Mills, or ‘The Helena Dress’ by Sew Me Something.*

Practice and master:  Gathered yokes,  Set-in sleeves,  Feature facings,  Top-stitching.

Experiment with:  Piping,  Pintucks,  Fabric combinations,  Lace and embellishments.

Understand how to: Alter your pattern to fit, Change features such as neckline or hem shape.

Having worked in the clothing industry for 20 years, as a designer, pattern cutter and garment technologist with companies such as Laura Ashley, Mother care and Fruit of the Loom, as well as more recently running her own business Melanie has wealth of experience and expertise to help you master good practical dressmaking skills and achieve that important perfect fit.  

Included: All equipment you will need is provided along with a healthy lunch, sweet treats & refreshments! You will need to bring along your own fabric for your garment (see below).
*Patterns for our suggested garments will be available for you to use (but you may provide your own pattern), following booking we will liase with you about the garment you wish to make and let you know the fabric requirements and notions (zips/buttons/matching thread) you will need to bring along with you on the day.
 
The patterns we have suggested should be achievable for you to make in a day, but this will of course depend on how fast you work, but don't worry, if you don't quite finish you will be given all the information you need and full telephone support if you need it to enable you to finish at home!
