Patchwood Sampler: Family (Hi)Stories
A new workshop with Ali Ferguson The Purple Thread Shed!
Do join us for a simply gorgeous day creating a very unique ‘Family Portrait’ from ‘patches’ of wood & your own collections of small family ‘treasures’.
You will create six individual patches embellished with your own small treasures all hand stitched into place. These will then be stitched together to create your unique wall piece. This is a beautiful way to curate & display some of these small, sentimental & often random objects that usually remain unseen in the bottom of drawers
The wood for your patches will be provided and Ali will bring along a lovely selection of vintage bits & pieces and sewing box treasures from her studio, The Purple Thread Shed. However to create a personal ‘Family (Hi)Story’ you will need to bring along your own collection of small objects.
Think about random little bits & pieces that have sentimental value to you – something picked up on a family walk, the key to your dad’s old tool shed, children’s drawings or school jotter pages. You may wish to use your mum’s haberdashery & sewing items, old hair pins or hat pin or dad’s rusty screws and nails (every shed had a jar), snippet of handwriting or doodle. Maybe you have old family recipes – or new family recipes, a child’s first hair bow (or lock of hair), tickets from family outings, a bent tent peg from family holidays or a b from the kitchen table.
Photos could be incorporated - the tiny black & white ones from the 60s are perfect – but they’ll need to be small in size. Your patches will vary in size from 12 x 7cm to 4 x 7cm so bear this in mind. We can copy photos and documents onto brown paper if you don’t want to use the original and Ali will show you a lovely way to transform these with wax. They would need to be re-sized before you bring them – we won’t have time to do this on the day.
Have fun thinking and gathering and bring along more than you think you will need. Although we will be working on a small area, it’s great to have a selection of objects that you can choose from.
There are a few messy bits so please bring an apron or at the very least don’t wear your Sunday Best!
INCLUDED: All materials and equipment* (see notes above for things you might wish to bring along) plus a lovely homemade lunch, cake and refreshments to keep you well fuelled through out the day!
