Whether you are new to dressmaking and would like to learn how to follow a pattern, and practice and improve the techniques required to make your chosen garment - or an experienced sewer who would love the excuse to indulge in a day or two of focused stitching - or a free spirit wanting to go ‘off-piste’ and experiment with fabric combinations, texture, pattern, colour and decorative techniques - Melanie's dressmaking workshops will provide you with guidance and inspiration, and teach the skills you need.

Make an unlined coat in a classic shape. Use Melanie's special finishing touches to create a beautiful finish.
Patterns that we suggest (but not limited to) ‘The Strand’ by Merchant & Mills, or ‘The Bianca Coat’ by Sew Me Something).
Practice and master: Different seam techniques – choose the most suitable for your pattern and fabric choice, Understand seam allowances, Facings (if the pattern requires)
Experiment with: Different seam treatments and finishes, Fabric combinations, Addition of trims & embellishments
Understand how to: Alter your pattern to fit, Add a lining if you require
Having worked in the clothing industry for 20 years, as a designer, pattern cutter and garment technologist with companies such as Laura Ashley, Mother care and Fruit of the Loom, as well as more recently running her own business Melanie has wealth of experience and expertise to help you master good practical dressmaking skills and achieve that important perfect fit.
